July 8-12, 2008


Application Deadline is APRIL 15, 2008!

Spend a week engaging in hands-on learning about the biology, ecology, and management of white-tailed deer with the State's top biologists, managers, educators, and media professionals!

Activities include:

  • Deer necropsy to learn about anatomy and physiology
  • Using radio telemetry in the field
  • Using GPS in the field
  • Nighttime deer spotlighting survey
  • Habitat evaluations
  • Deer trivia
  • Making a collection of plants important to deer
  • Nature photography and journaling
  • Ageing deer on the hoof and using jaw bones
  • Role of hunting in deer management. Firearm safety and target practice

When: July 8-12, 2008 (Tuesday - Saturday)

Cost: $350.00
Scholarships are available to help cover tuition costs!

Where: At the beautiful Raystown Field Station, Juniata College, Raystown, PA

Making plant collections is a great way for students to learn to identify local plants that are important to deer.

Participants learn to age deer using jaw bones and on the hoof.

Pennsylvania Drummers

A week of engaging in hands-on learning about the biology, ecology, and management of Pennsylvania's state bird, the Ruffed Grouse.

Activities would include:

  • Grouse necropsy to learn about anatomy and physiology
  • Using radio telemetry in the field
  • Using GPS in the field
  • Habitat evaluations
  • Making a collection of plants important to grouse
  • Grouse trivia
  • Nature photography and journaling
  • Bird dog training
  • Shotgun safety and clay shoot
